Technical Overview[]
Authlanis is the only inhabited world of the Skyview System. The world Authlanis orbits Skyview much too slowly for its orbital radius, so that it would be sure to drop into a much more sharply elliptical orbit if not for the other large planet in the system, Denia. Denia orbits Skyview at a much greater distance than Authlanis, but maintains the same angular velocity, so that it would be sure to fly off in a hugely elliptical orbit if not for its strong magnetic attraction to Authlanis. Authlanis and Denia have opposite magnetic charges, and the attraction between them is sufficient to keep their orbits roughly circular, though enough eccentricity remains that the surface temperature of Authlanis varies noticeably over the course of its year.
The rounded underside of Authlanis is more weakly charged than the ground nearer the surface, so that Authlanis always faces Denia and never Skyview. Authlanis receives the light of Skyview partly from the broad, dim face of Denia, and partly from a wide belt of small, bright asteroids that orbit Skyview on a nearly shared path. This common orbit is strongly elliptical, and always passes between Authlanis and Denia due to a slight negative charge that allows the two planets to “pull” the moons' orbit about Skyview. These asteroids are spaced in such a way that the inhabitants of Authlanis mistake the even asteroids for a single body, which they call a sun, and the odd asteroids for a single body, which they call a moon. These are dwarfed, however, by Authlanis's true moon Denia, and the Peoplespeak word for these small "suns" and "moons", issik, can be equally well translated as "stars".
The entire Skyview system is delicately balanced, and a single nuclear explosion in the wrong place could free the magnetic surface of Authlanis from its underside, sending its inhabitants crashing into Denia and Denia flying into deep space. But there are no nuclear weapons here – this is a world of magic.
History[]
Authlanis Creation Myth[]
The records of Time begin with the Deliberation of the Cosmos. The eternity before the Deliberation is now known only to the Authlanis Cosmos themselves, Enesis who Stands on the Left and Susie who Stands on the Right.
The Deliberation was the first Planning of Reality. It was then decreed that Reality should be formed in two Stages, the Unveiling and the Remodeling. The scriptures of Goddess Arnasia dictate that the two-stage Creation was first proposed by Enesis, while those of Uule attribute the idea to Susie. Some wizards say that a third Stage was planned, but no scriptural reference has yet been found to either confirm or deny this idea.
In the First Stage, the Unveiling of Reality, the Cosmos created many things and the potential for new growth and invention of all kinds. It was in the time following the Unveiling that all things were made and conceived, though many events were not yet to be and, finding no foothold, submerged into the chaos. These Forgotten Events still continue to gradually reappear, as their circumstances arise. Because the lantern of Goddess Arnasia and all the heavenly bodies were then still Forgotten, the time between the First and Second Stages is called the Perfect Darkness. Some say that when children are first born, they still remember their brief lives in the Perfect Darkness before they were Forgotten.
Even in the Perfect Darkness, however, there were the beginnings of the laws of Reality that would be. Similar People gathered together into tribes. The Tall People gathered in the plains, the Short People gathered in the mountains, the Furry People gathered in the tundras, the Scaly People gathered in the deserts, and the Feathery People and the Playful People gathered in the forests.
During this time, all experiences were new. The wind felt for the first time the swiftness of falling down mountain tops, and the Playful People first heard the sound of a rock skipping across water. At this time was first known the smell of a pollinating flower, the sight of a thunder storm, the taste of fresh water, the warmth of fire, the shifting of earth, the briskness of air, the laughter of children.
Therefore the Cosmos came down from Mount Because in the Land of the Spheres where the deities had gathered, and they crossed the sea to the main land. Susie the Cosmo who Stands to the Left and Enesis the Cosmo who Stands to the Right took notes in what they called the Tomes of the Cosmos, describing the patterns they saw and would keep, and deciding when each of their transient creations should have its time.
The Second Stage, the Remodeling of Reality, introduced all the structures, laws, and negations necessary for Reality to be stable. For this the Cosmos drew on the notes that they had written in the Tomes of the Cosmos. The Cosmos designed and set in place The Way Things Are, including the nature of Time, the four Dominions and their kinds of People, and the y'tons of all the deities. The Way Things Are was the clock that henceforth would be the pulse of Reality. All things and all potential for all things would flow from The Way Things Are.
Then the Cosmos placed themselves again in the Center, on top of Mount Because, and gave themselves y'tons. Enesis took on the y'ton of All Things To Do With Nothing, and Susie chose the y'ton of All Things to Do with All Things.
And so it was and so it shall be. From Mount Because, the Blessed Cosmos gave us our light and our y'tons, our homes and our mountains, our seas and our lives.
A World Without Stars[]
A World Without Stars is an epic poem that chronicles the War of the Golden Scimitar, the first major upheaval of the mythological Authlanic Pantheon. The poem was traditionally passed down through oral tradition within the Magisary but was finally put into book-form allegedly by the poet Archmenesis, although modern scholars are still unsure of the source.
