Basilicus Weights and Measures (BWM), or the Basilican System of Units (BSU), is an original system of weights and measures not rooted in Earth-native concepts for use in Science Fiction or other settings having no relationship with Earth or human civilization. Although many settings, worlds, and civilization will likely have their own specific system for measurements this one can be used when no system is in place.

Basilicus Weights and Measures have been superceded by the Derived System of Units (DSU). All articles in Basilicus projects should use DSU to keep terms standardized.

Standard Distance Units[]

Standard Distance Units are neutral units used to measure astronomical distances. An SDU is one googol times the longest wavelength that will cause a single photon to become a black hole.

The exact conversion is 1 SDU := 1.6162 × 1065 m.

Earth Conversion[]

  • 1 SDU = 1.6162E+65 meters
  • 1 SDU = 1.6162E+62 kilometers
  • 1 SDU = 1.0043E+62 miles
  • 1 SDU = 1.7675E+65 yards
  • 1 SDU = 1.7083E+49 light years

Reverse Earth Conversion[]

  • 1 Meter = 6.1874E-66 SDU
  • 1 Kilometer = 6.1874E-63 SDU
  • 1 Mile = 9.9576E-63 SDU
  • 1 Yard = 5.6577E-66 SDU
  • 1 Light Year = 5.8537E-50 SDU

Minor Distance Units[]

Minor Distance Units are neutral units used to measure average terrestrial distances. An MDU is ten decillion (1034) times the longest wavelength that will cause a single photon to become a black hole.

The exact conversion is 1 MDU := 1.616 × 10−1 m.

Earth Conversion[]

  • 1 MDU = 0.16162 meters
  • 1 MDU = 0.00016162 kilometers
  • 1 MDU = 0.00010043 miles
  • 1 MDU = 0.17675 yards
  • 1 MDU = 1.7083E-17 light years

Reverse Earth Conversion[]

  • 1 Meter = 6.1874 MDU
  • 1 Kilometer = 6187.4 MDU
  • 1 Mile = 9957.6 MDU
  • 1 Yard = 5.6577 MDU
  • 1 Light Year = 5.8537E+16 MDU

Standard Time Units[]

Standard Time Units are neutral units used to measure time. An STU is one quattuordecillion (the power of 45) of the time it takes for a photon to cross a SDU^-100 when going the speed of light.

The exact conversion is 1 STU := 5.3910629 × 101 s.

Earth Conversion[]

  • 1 STU = 53.911 seconds
  • 1 STU = 0.89851 minutes
  • 1 STU = 0.014975 hours

Reverse Earth Conversion[]

  • 1 Second = 0.018549 STU
  • 1 Minute = 1.113 STU
  • 1 Hour = 66.777 STU

Standard Mass Units[]

Standard Mass Units are neutral units used to measure mass. An SMU is one hundred million (108) times the mass of a photon when its wavelength will cause it to become a black hole.

The exact conversion is 1 SMU := 2.176 × 100 kg.

Earth Conversion[]

  • 1 SMU = 2.176 kilograms
  • 1 SMU = 2176 grams
  • 1 SMU = 4.7973 pounds (on Earth)

Reverse Earth Conversion[]

  • 1 Kilogram = 0.45956 SMU
  • 1 Gram = 0.00045956 SMU
  • 1 Pound (on Earth) = 0.20845 SMU

Standard Temperature Units[]

Standard Temperature Units are neutral units used to measure temperature. An STE is a decillionth (10-39) of the temperature of a molecule with 1 SMU of heat energy.

The exact conversion is 1 STE := 1.417 × 101 K.

Earth Conversion[]

  • 0 STE = 0 Kelvin
  • 1 STE = 14.17 Kelvin
  • 0 STE = -273.15 Celsius
  • 1 STE = -258.98 Celsius
  • 0 STE = -459.67 Fahrenheit
  • 1 STE = -434.16 Fahrenheit

Reverse Earth Conversion[]

  • 0 Kelvin = 0 STE
  • 1 Kelvin = 0.070572 STE
  • 0 Celsius = 19.277 STE
  • 1 Celsius = 19.347 STE
  • 0 Fahrenheit = 18.022 STE
  • 1 Fahrenheit = 18.061 STE
