Sabeau is a continent in Authlanis. The major influences on the continent are the Magisary in the Land of the Deities, the People of Sabeau in the Kingdom of Sabeau, the People of Uule in Arnasia, and the Sonponosota Empire in Arnasia. Sabeau is also home to the legendary Mountains of Confrontation, the Sea of the Deities, and the Jin Salts.
Governments[]
Each region in Sabeau has fairly clear borders where similar creatures settled. The Bonsua Peninsula is separated from the Kingdom of Sabeau by the Northern Sabeau Mountains. The Kingdom of Sabeau is bordered by the Krad Sea and the Southern Sabeau Mountains. The Land of the Deities is separated from the Virtus Kingdom by the Bay of Virtus and Arnasia stands alone bordering the Land of the Deities by the Mountains of Confrontation.
Once inside the borders of a particular region, the political influences become far more unclear. With the exception of the Virtus Kingdom, all of the regions are heavily divided among different ownerships and influences. Many settlements are organized under a common policy, as with the Sabeau Dragons in the Kingdom of Sabeau, or a philosophy, as are the tribes and cities regulated by the Magisary in the Land of the Deities; but many political bodies only extend over a handful of communities. Outside of the Kingdom of Sabeau and the Kingdom of Virtus, the largest political body is probably the Sonponosota Empire in southern Arnasia, even though this "empire" contains only seven cities (albeit scattered throughout the region).
The internal conflicts between different communities within a region have made it historically impossible for regions to organize efforts against each other. Ever since the rampages of the dragons against the south a thousand seasons ago, no dispute on a continental scale has taken place. It is common opinion among historians that society has not yet fully recovered from the fall of the Jin Civilization two thousand seasons ago, which is recorded to have stretched far beyond the contemporary borders of the Kingdom of Sabeau.
The only political body that attempts to keep peace between the various regional influences is the Magisary, which dispatches knights throughout the continent to protect the will of the Cosmos. Although traditionally respected by most people and welcomed by needy regions, the Magisary has recently come close to overstepping its bounds, and conflicts have begun to arise outside the continent, notably in Sentra. The Magisary has never engaged in open war, but disputes have occurred with Sentra, Sonponosota, and Virtus.
Religion[]
Through the influence of the Magisary, the majority believe in the Cosmo Pantheon as their primary religion. After the Cosmo Pantheon, most creatures follow their namesake god, although practices very greatly. Sabeau is worshipped by the dragons, Uule by the Uule People, Epistarin by the Magnaphars, and Arnasia by the Sonponosotans. Many creatures use magic as a form of worship, although magic is also used secularly.
Economy[]
There are three major trade routes through the continent. Sentra opened trade to Arnasia and Virtus via the Krad Sea and even set up some colonies in both regions. The Deity Trade Triad in the Land of the Deities links three obscure settlements into massive trading. Reluctance Pass connecting the Land of the Deities and the Kingdom of Sabeau is one of the most traveled routes in the known world. This pass makes accessible all regions of the continent to all the other continents.
The dragons hold most of the wealth as a result of this trade. Centered in Tria on the border of the Kingdom of Sabeau, the dragons operate banking and trading facilities for travelers and traders.
Society[]
The majority of people on the continent exist as autonomous city-states, fiefdoms or tribes. With only a few exceptions people exist to support only their communities and typically have a sole ruler appointed by gods and goddesses. Most communities are theocratic while others are simply monarchies.
History[]
After the Unveiling of Reality the known world was in chaos. Since all creatures were brand new and there was no day to shed light on their environment there was a thousand year period of wandering.
During this period similar creatures found each other and started humble communities based on hunting and gathering. Those creatures that could see without light swiftly gained military power over those that could not.
The Dragon Reign[]
In the very early seasons of the Sabeau Continent, the dragons took supremacy over the land. Their strength, endurance, flight, and night vision made them a formidable enemy to the biped people. They ruled the continent in terror, pillaging communities for precious metals. In certain dragon traditions, a measure of wealth was directly dependent on raids.
The dragons reigned for five hundred seasons before the terror ended. From the south a civilization called the Jin came of age; many believe the cradle of the Jin was in what is now the Jin Salts. They perfected extraordinary magic and quickly gained both wealth and military strength across Arnasia.
The Jin Reign[]
The Jin adapted their bodies to assimilate with the night. The transformation was swift, the rise to magic swifter. It has been rumored that the Jin reached immortality with their magic and challenged the very power of the Cosmos.
Their influence spread farther north and eventually they challenged the dragons. In an epic hundred-season war, the dragons were finally subdued. The more warriors fled deep into the northern Sabeaus while the politicians of the south made amends with the Jin and negotiated treaties.
The Jin kept peace with the dragons from then on and with the exception of a few renegade attacks, the continent was spared from their ruthlessness. The Jin, however, replaced it with an even greater ruthlessness. Although it has never been confirmed, there are those that say the Jin dabbled in necromancy and sought to rid their lands of the living so as to have a whole empire of immortals.
In what many consider a judgment day, the Cosmos introduced day to the world and the first light destroyed the Jin and most of their cities. With no structure or boundaries, the continent fell into economic and political turmoil at the end of Perfect Darkness.
Modern Era[]
The first to climb out of the dark ages were the Magisary who began a long tradition of worship for the Cosmos and developed an army of knights to protect a land with no laws. Soon after the rise of the Magisary, Sonponosota and the Empire of Foreverness rose under the arm of the goddess Arnasia. The dragons came together under one rule, but different tribes have fallen into conflict. In the rainforest, the Virtus civilization was born shortly after the unity of the dragons.
Even after thousands of seasons, the continent is still broken up enough that no single influence has taken great hold or has attempted to expand beyond its natural borders. If there was ever unity among the communities or even between regions it would have to be against a very powerful and common threat.
